In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into some fundamental questions about the carbon cycle and its implications for our planet. Join us as we explore the reasons behind the rising CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and examine the factors that contribute to this concerning trend. We also take a closer look at the mechanisms behind CO2 build-up in the atmosphere and consider possible solutions to prevent it. If you're curious about the science behind climate change and eager to learn more about the critical issues facing our planet, this is an episode you won't want to miss!

Meet our guest

Meet Prof. Mark Saeys who at Ghent University's Laboratory for Chemical Technology is making groundbreaking studies in the field of catalyst development. He's contributed to several major publications, including the Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilization Roadmap for Singapore and "The Chemical Route to a CO2-neutral World", which was published by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium. By combining modelling and experimental validation, his research is shedding new light on how to create effective catalysts, with the ultimate goal of moving towards a CO2-neutral future. He is a leading academic partner of the CO2 pipeline of CAPTURE initiative, and actively collaborates with industrial and academic partners in the field of circular economy and CCU technologies. As the coordinator of the Scientific Research Network (CCU WOG) funded by the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO), Prof. Saeys is instrumental in building a multidisciplinary network of scientists focused on Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies. This initiative is crucial in developing the necessary know-how for a low-carbon circular economy, and is connected with well-established research groups in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
